Biography
Kyari Abba-Bukar is a highly respected business leader, board chairman, and technology-driven strategist with over 30 years of executive and board-level experience spanning banking, payments, technology, insurance, private equity, and corporate governance. Widely recognised for transforming organisations into efficient, customer-centric, and high-performing institutions, he has played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria's modern financial and digital ecosystem.
Mr. Abba-Bukar was instrumental in the introduction of Visa card payments into the Nigerian banking landscape during his tenure as Managing Director and CEO of ValuCard Nigeria Plc, laying the foundation for electronic payments in the country. Earlier in his career, he spent over a decade at Hewlett-Packard (HP) in the United States, where he rose to senior management roles and managed a USD 5 billion business unit, delivering technology programs and operational efficiencies that generated USD 85 million in annual cost savings.
He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering (with a minor in Mechanical Engineering) from Oregon State University, USA, and completed an MBA program at Portland State University, USA. His executive education includes advanced programs at Harvard Business School, Wharton Business School, University of Cambridge, and Lagos Business School, with a strong focus on leadership, technology, digital transformation, and board governance.
Mr. Abba-Bukar currently serves as Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Chairman of Sunu Assurance Plc, Chairman of ARCA Payments Ltd, and Chairman of Ventures Platform Ltd. He is also an Independent Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd and the Development Bank of Nigeria. His broader public and private sector contributions include membership of national committees on payments systems and identity harmonisation, as well as leadership roles in technology, youth development, and corporate philanthropy.
